Bayern Munich consider legal action against Canada Soccer over Davies injury

Davies tore ACL during Nations League third-place gameClub executives demand ‘full investigation into events’ Bayern Munich are considering legal action against the Canadian soccer federation after Alphonso Davies sustained a serious knee injury in the Concacaf Nations League third-place playoff on Sunday. “We’re demanding a full investigation into the events from Canada Soccer and expressly reserve the right to take legal action,” the Bayern chief executive, Jan-Christian Dreesen, told the German newspaper Bild on Friday. Davies tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and sustained other damage to his right knee during Canada’s 2-1 win over the United States. The full-back returned to Munich where the full extent of the injury was determined and “will be out for several months”, according to his club. Bayern Munich are alleging that Canadian officials did not provide appropriate care for the player by starting him in “a match of no sporting significance”. Both teams had lost in the tournament semi-finals, Canada beaten by eventual winners Mexico and the US losing to Panama. “Sending a clearly injured player with a damaged knee on a 12-hour flight without a thorough medical assessment is, in our view, grossly negligent and a clear breach of medical duty of care,” Dreesen said. “The participation of Davies, who already had muscular problems before the game, in a match of no sporting significance is incomprehensible from our point of view.” Continue reading...

Celtic’s Champions League strides have made them a serious entity again | Ewan Murray

For more than a decade the club threw up their hands at the challenge in Europe but Rodgers’ team now embrace it Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. The acclaim given to Celtic’s squad and management as their Champions League campaign ended in the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night had to be about far more than the detail of an agonising exit at the hands of Bayern Munich. Brendan Rodgers had spoken about a potential tide-shifting moment after Daizen Maeda scored for Celtic in the first leg, halving Bayern’s lead. It actually came as Nicolas Kühn sent the visiting support into a frenzy in the reverse fixture. The reality is Celtic remain notches below teams of Bayern’s calibre. At least they should be; a fantastically courageous display from Rodgers’ men had Bayern fearing a tournament exit. Celtic deserved so, so much better than a 94th-minute aggregate defeat to an ugly Alphonso Davies goal. This has been a period of striking European progress. Celtic have latched on to the fact that retaining Scottish trinkets, while viewed as essential, triggers shoulder shrugs beyond Glasgow. Europe is where Celtic can be seriously judged. Europe is where Celtic made themselves a serious entity again this season. They did so against the unorthodox backdrop of a domestic league where they are streets ahead of the opposition. This scenario intensifies Celtic’s Champions League test. Dundee United’s sporting equivalent in the Bundesliga would thrash Dundee United. Yet here were Celtic giving Bayern such serious food for thought. Celtic did this not just with discipline but swagger. Continue reading...

‘They gave everything’: Rodgers proud of Celtic after late defeat by Bayern

Stoppage-time Alphonso Davies goal settles playoff‘I can only take immense pride from the performance’ Brendan Rodgers expressed his “immense pride” at Celtic’s showing at the Allianz Arena, after a goal in stoppage time by Alphonso Davies denied the Scottish champions extra time in their Champions League playoff against Bayern Munich. Celtic led the second leg of their playoff tie 1-0 after Nicolas Kühn’s 63rd-minute goal and caused their hosts all manner of problems. Bayern scraped through 3-2 on aggregate but Celtic took the plaudits. Continue reading...

Davies’ late strike for Bayern breaks Celtic hearts in Champions League

If Bayern Munich are heavily incentivised by the return of the Champions League final to their home stadium, this was a strange way of showing it. To Celtic, all the plaudits following a heroic showing in Bavaria. This performance ranks among the finest by a Scottish team away from home in Europe in living memory. Extra-time felt the least they deserved after they took a second half lead. They were denied it by a horrible, scrappy goal claimed by Alphonso Davies after a Cameron Carter-Vickers clearance rebounded back off him from all of two yards. Celtic have grown in this Champions League. In Munich, they came of age. This outcome was cruel. Continue reading...

Football transfer rumours: Ronaldo on the move? City in for Zubimendi?

Today’s rumours are driving you to the door Paracetamol. Check. Water. Check. Rumour Mill? Check! Welcome to 2025, eerily similar to the end of 2024, save for a new calendar on the kitchen wall and the opening of the January transfer window. Not only does that mean that ailing Manchester-based clubs will be able to sign new shiny players for extortionate prices, but also that players out of contract at the end of this season will also be able to arrange free transfers on the cheap (but with extortionate wages). Among the latter is Cristiano Ronaldo, who is nearing the end of the record contract – total reported salary of €200m (£177m) per year once commercial agreements are included – that tempted him to Saudi Arabia two years ago. The Portuguese has previously stated that he wanted to win the Saudi title with Al-Nassr, something he has not yet achieved, but when pushed on his future last week he stated: “You never know what can happen in the future.” Whether he stays put or not, Ronaldo will not be short of offers, even with his 40th birthday looming in February. There are a host of superstars out of contract in six months, with Son Heung-min, Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kevin De Bruyne, Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies, Leroy Sané, Jonathan Tah, Jonathan David and Angel Gomes all free to begin talks with other clubs in January.
