Email michael.butler@theguardian.com “There’s no point in keeping players that Slot won’t play, so Chiesa and Nunez go, maybe others”, emails Nigel Guest. “Robertson is fading, so we need another left back. Salah desperately needs a good backup. He can’t keep playing every minute. Otherwise, it depends who else leaves.” Yep, certainly a bonafide right winger is needed, as well as a right back if/when Trent Alexander-Arnold departs. I would personally keep Robertson for his experience and buy a top younger left-back for him to mentor, such as Bournemouth’s Kerkez or Fulham’s Antonee Robinson. Maybe sell Tsimikas, although the Greek is dependable. Another excellent centre-back, to challenge Konate and Van Dijk would be prudent, if they can afford that. The goalkeeper situation is interesting, given Giorgi Mamardashvili is going to join this summer from Valencia. We have to try to manage the emotions. We have regained our momentum by winning some games. We are playing against winner players with winner mentality, so I expect a tough game. Continue reading...
Giorgi Mamardashvili was the first signing of the Arne Slot era at Liverpool but the Georgian's dip in performance at Valencia has handed the Premier League leaders a goalkeeper dilemma
Manager plans to make bigger move into transfer marketLack of business last summer was deliberate strategy Liverpool are plotting for a busier summer of recruitment as they look to mould the squad to Arne Slot’s demands, the Dutchman has said. The club have been quiet in the market since Slot replaced Jürgen Klopp but he has pinpointed the positions the team need to upgrade. Only Federico Chiesa has arrived at Anfield under Slot, although a deal has been agreed for the goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to join from Valencia. Liverpool lead the Premier League table and are 17 points clear of Sunday’s opponents Manchester City, but Slot and the sporting director Richard Hughes are working on creating a shortlist of targets. Valencia's Nou Mestalla has been plagued with issues since it was first announced in 2007 and the unfinished structure has now been dealt another big blow
Jamie Carragher has never been afraid of taking a dig at Gary Neville for his disastrous stint with Spanish giants Valencia and made another comment during a recent debate surrounding Manchester United
César Tárrega, whose home town was badly hit by the floods, scored the first goal in an emotional defeat of Betis Somewhere in the mud and the destruction a ball appeared, left there by the flood. Six days after the worst catastrophe in Spanish history had taken 229 lives and devastated thousands more, on a street still caked in sludge a game began. Someone recorded it, sharing a moment’s happiness amidst the pain, a little light and hope let in: four boys from the small town of Aldaia covered in dirt, playing among piles of furniture from broken homes. Nineteen days later and seven miles away, a fifth local boy scored the goal of this or any season. At 2.12pm on Saturday, seven minutes into Valencia’s first game since the catastrophe – not so much a football match as an expression of community, one giant, collective embrace – the ball dropped to César Tárrega at the south end of Mestalla. It was a simple finish, but if these fans have seen better goals, they hadn’t felt any like this. Suddenly, the silence – and it had been so, so silent – was broken, all those emotions escaping. Tárrega had cried in the quiet before kick off; now he let go, tears returning to his eyes. Then he ran to collect a shirt, holding it high. On the back, a message had been printed: “Tots junts eixirem.” Together, we will come through this. Continue reading...
A month ago they were winless and certain for relegation but then in came a charismatic coach for whom every detail matters Diego Martínez and his players made a pact not to look at the table but this time, as they headed along the cramped passageway, down the stairs, out the little red door and on to the big yellow bus, carrying Telepizzas and turning on phones, they could be forgiven for taking a sneaky peek. They had just beaten Rayo Vallecano 3-1 and, for the first time since August, were not in the relegation zone. It was three minutes after midnight on Friday when they pulled out of Fofo the Clown Street and turned left towards the hotel, another long flight home awaiting the following morning. They were probably still wondering how it had happened, how any of it had, but UD Las Palmas travelled in hope again. When the bus departed, one player wasn’t on board. Manu Fuster’s mother has been feeding flood victims at her restaurant in Quart de Poblet; now his brother was waiting for him in the car outside, ready to take him home. With a lovely flick of his right foot, he had scored the third, having only been on the pitch two minutes. “It was very special for everything that’s happened, because it’s my first in primera, because it helped us win,” he said before setting off straight for Valencia. “If you’d said we’d be in this position this a month back, we’d have put our heads in our hands. No one bet a duro, five pesetas, on us but things have changed completely.” Continue reading...
Pedro Porro has been devastated by the scenes in Valencia as he watches the death toll in the region pass 200 and the Tottenham defender is donating some of his wage to the cause
